Herzog Celebrates Successful Inaugural Summer Internship Program with Nationwide Impact

Herzog has completed its inaugural Summer Internship Program, a 10-week program training interns across the country.

The class included 11 interns throughout different projects and departments. After they spent the summer in their respective positions, all interns presented to a panel of judges, showcasing what they learned and how Herzog’s culture impacted them. The judges then selected a winner to receive the $5,000 scholarship. The interns that competed this year are listed below.

  • Adalyn Horn- Kansas City Streetcar Main Street Extension
  • Spencer Wood- Penn Coach Yard Heavy Maintenance Facility
  • Andrew Kennedy- Montana Rail Link
  • Sholom Marcus- Silver Line Regional Rail Project
  • Akash Jain- Silver Line Regional Rail Project
  • Devani Torres- Silver Line Regional Rail Project
  • Clell Hanson- Estimating
  • Frank Sweiger- Estimating
  • Logan Taylor- Estimating
  • Jesica Beattie- Estimating
  • Tyler Fisher- Proposals

The first recipient of the $5,000 scholarship is Shalom Marcus, an intern on the DART Silver Line Regional Rail Project in Dallas, TX.

“It was a new experience. Everything was new to me,” Marcus said. “I didn’t realize how passionate I was about this industry, especially the construction side.”

Interns are not new to Herzog, as the company has had many over the years. However, an extra emphasis was placed on the new internship program to enrich the experience for both Herzog and its interns.

“The [new program] came from building a structure around what the interns needed and how it was going to benefit both the interns and the company,” Recruiting Manager Heidi Sweeney said. “[We focused on] getting them involved and helping them understand who we are as a company and who they are inside of their roles.”

The new internship program focused on teaching soft skills such as public speaking, effective communication, and time management as well as core competencies that related to the roles the interns were in. Each intern was also assigned a mentor that helped them throughout their internship and provided insight and feedback.

There was also an emphasis on Herzog culture through “Culture Townhall” where leaders from Herzog spoke to the interns about the different pillars of culture, such as Power of the Team and Safety Without Compromise.

The meetings covering these topics were typically hosted on Microsoft Teams with all of the interns across the country together. This was done intentionally to create a sense of camaraderie among the class and help them form relationships with each other.

At the conclusion of the program, Herzog hosted a Q&A panel for the interns to ask questions to experienced members of the company.

“We concentrated on there being value in this program for the universities the students went to, to each of the interns that participated in the program and to Herzog,” Senior Vice President of Pursuits and Development Craig Ebersold said. “What surprised me is how proud I was and how much I valued their success and watching the students grow.”

This year’s internship program was limited to the National Construction division within Herzog Contracting Corp. However, the program is looking to expand across the enterprise after the success seen in the program’s inaugural year.
